Peter Gabriel è uno degli artisti rock più conosciuti e apprezzati al mondo, fin dai suoi esordi come cantante dei Genesis. Recentemente ha pubblicato la cover di “The Power of the Heart” di Lou Reed nell’album “Scratch My Back” e Lou aveva inciso, di rimando, la sua versione di “Solsbury Hill“ di Peter Gabriel. Questo il suo ricordo di Lou:
Oh Lou, dove sei andato?
Abbiamo perso un grande artista e io ho perso un amico.
Sono state le tue parole e il tuo lavoro con i Velvet Underground che hanno ispirato Vaclav Havel a chiamare la rivoluzione Ceca “The Velvet Revolution”, la rivoluzione di velluto. Hai preso, come un grande romanziere, una profonda attenzione per la psiche e l’anima e l’hai appiccicata ad una chitarra elettrica.
Quella chiarezza d’intenti e quella fiera onestà sono state un simbolo di libertà, come nient’altro. Hai portato questa onestà, purezza e passione in tutto ciò che hai fatto. Che si trattasse di scrittori, amplificatori, artisti, fotografia, tai chi, amicizie, gli occhiali che hai disegnati, i viaggi che hai fatto … tutti quanti attorno a te sapevano esattamente che cosa ti appassionava, cosa amavi e cosa odiavi. Potevi essere così difficile, narcisistico e intransigente, ma a coloro che permettevi di andare oltre la tua giacca di pelle che era una protezione con la parvenza quasi di un veleno, incontrava un uomo speciale che era dolce, tenero e eccezionalmente leale. Vedere tu e Laurie incontrarsi era come vedere degli adolescenti innamorati (ma super-intelligenti).
Tutti conoscevano il Lou di New York, che poteva raccontarti pregi e difetti da esploratore urbano della vita moderna, esplorando droghe e identità sessuale; ma quanti hanno notato il grande poeta romantico di “Power of the heart” che hai scritto per Laurie? E che intelligenza ironica e tagliente che portavi sempre con te, che poteva guardare attraverso l’involucro di ogni cosa e arrivarne dritto al cuore pulsante.
E’ stato un piacere immenso mangiare e ridere con te e sentire quel suono acuto di divertimento, che faceva eco per tutta la stanza esplodendo dal niente. Oh, Lou. Ci mancherai. PG

It was your words and your work with the Velvet Underground that inspired Vaclav Havel to name the Czech revolution, the Velvet Revolution. You brought a great novelist’s unswerving attention to the human psyche and soul and attached it to an electric guitar. That clarity and fierce honesty symbolized freedom, like nothing else. You carried this honesty, purity and passion into whatever you did. Whether it was writers, amplifiers, artists, photography, tai chi, friendships, the glasses you designed or the journeys you had taken, anyone around you knew exactly what you were into; what you loved and hated. You could be so difficult, narcissistic and intransigent, but anyone you allowed beyond that leather-jacketed protective and sometimes-poisonous veneer got to meet a special man that was sweet, tender and exceptionally loyal. Watching you and Laurie finding each other was like watching teenage sweethearts (albeit super-smart). Everyone knew New York Lou, who could tell you all the ups and downs of the modern-day urban explorer, exploring drugs and sexual identity, but how many noticed the great romantic poet of the Power of the Heart that you wrote for Laurie. And what wry sharp intelligence you carried with you at all times, that could cut through any packaging and reveal the living and beating core. It was always such a pleasure to eat and laugh with you and hear that high-pitched squeal of delight, echoing around the room and bursting out of nowhere. Oh Lou, we’re going to miss you. PG“
