01 Who Loves the Sun
02 Senselessly Cruel
03 Temporary Thing
04 Ecstacy
05 Smalltown
06 Mother
07 Venus in Furs
08 Sunday Morning
09 Femme Fatale
10 Waves of Fear
11 Sweet Jane

BIS
12 The Bells

Sai quanto cosano i bilgietti a Roma?

Tutto qua.

“I saw him at Glastonbury with the Velvets. Not a festival act. Better suited to a cellar bar than a field.
Fan review of his Hop Farm gig here suggested he may have Alzeimers.

Lou Reed . . . yes i know his live shows can be hit and miss these days and that he likes to ‘play for himself not the crowd’ and all that, but still, this was horrific – and i say that as a huge Velvets and Lou fan, this isn’t a bitch. The crowd was almost speechless, the atmosphere flat and silent, people started to talk amongst themselves. The other artists gathering in the wings to pay tribute to this legend also looked embarrassed.

Not only did Lou seem to have trouble walking onto the stage (also note he was the only performer without an introduction from the presenter) but he barely spoke let alone sung, he seemed medicated, the band drab (appart from one blistering rip by the guitarist) and at times Lou burst-out into a rage fit that looked like a senile oap having a fit, which led to some people bursting out in laughter. It was like watching a very very old man get angry when unable to express himself. it was heartbreaking – and if i wasn’t aware of Lou’s history and talent i, like so many other people would have been very disappointed.

The track listing was ridiculous – although a glimmer of light flickered briefly as Lou was roused by the iconic ‘Sweet Jane’, other than that it was obvious he was reading from an autocue, and the entire band seemed bemused – although it became clear they had to play everything down in order not to show Lou up as being so frail. One may expect an artist to at least play their greatest hits before indulging in covering other artists songs.

At the start i thought the whole thing was a spoken-word art thing, or two fingers to the festival, but as it went on it became clear that . . . this was it. He also staggered over to the violinist to rub and pat him on the shoulder rather patronisingly as to say ‘good job’ to which the musician did not respond. Again i am a Lou fan, huge, and i say these things out of concern – this was not an artist fit to perform or more importantly one that was unable to, his management must have known this of course and helps explain why he wasn’t given and introduction and why he wasn’t top billing on the line-up. He even ambled off stage to be ushered by staff who seemed to be in fear of him falling over, at times he didn’t know where to put his hands on the guitar even – remember – this is Lou ****ing Reed. It didn’t make sense.

My point of concern is that he may actually have the start of Alzheimer’s Disease, i’ve seen two family members go down with it so i do have several points of reference, and if there’s any other fans reading this who were as close to the stage as i am they’ll know what i mean. People applauded out of sympathy and respect and the embarrassment was palpable. My concerns albeit speculation were mirrored by many others i spoke to at the festival.”

ith rumours that Lou was going to be playing some of his late 70s tunes anticipation was high for a more varied set than for the last 10/15 yrs. Gone is Fernando Saunders who has been playing bass in his band since the 80s. This I feel was well over due and for the 2011 tour in comes some younger musicians – the musical director (keyboards) Kevin Hearn from ‘The Barenaked Ladies’. Tony Diodore & Aram Bajakian on guitars. Lou has retained the 90s players Rob Wasserman & Tony Smith on bass and drums.

For someone who has seen Lou’s show since the early 90s the 1st of Julys show was a relevation. After a delayed start causing some angry shouts Lou looked frail as he walked onto the stage and began ‘Who Loves The Sun’ – a great start to any Lou gig to hear a Velvets track. The sound was a bit rough round the edges, it was very obvious that the band were still finding their feet musically and it took a few more tunes before the sound mix improved. WLTS was pretty faithful to the Loaded version and Lou’s new band sounded full and enthusiastic. The promise of 70s material materialised very quickly with great run throughs of ‘Senselessly Cruel’ & ‘Temporary Thing’. Lou hasn’t performed these songs in over 30 yrs. ‘Smalltown’ showed the power of the band and was something that had been very well rehearsed with its much more pronounced quiet/loud stop/starts, tons more drama than the original and you could now understand why Lou has left it in the set with all its clattering volume. The next song ‘Mother’ (John Lennon cover) was a real surprise in both song choice and delivery. I believe Lou has performed this just once before in the early 90s at a J Lennon tribute night in Liverpool. Lou was performing with real passion and thinking about every word. He was also very much giving a ‘performance’ rather than just standing at the mic and mumbling. A very powerful show of his vocals, he didn’t hit the mark every time but the strength and passion more than made up for the faults.

What followed next was what every Velvets fan wants to hear – 3 songs from the VU & Nico LP kinda ‘unplugged’ style. ‘Venus’ was loud, dark and menacing with some great drumming from Tony, sadly they started re-arranging the stage before the song had finished. With the band gathered round him and Lou starting off sitting on the drum riser and then standing they did ‘Sunday Morning’ & ‘Femme Fatale’ which had a wonky / under rehearsed charm about them. It is noticeable that Lou’s stage performance is completely different on this tour, what struck me most was how similar to Leonard Cohen in stance/posture Lou was looking.

Back to the 70s with a great ‘All Through The Night’ and the band left. Back to encores of ‘Sweet Jane’ and ‘Charleys Girl’ both of which really benefitted from the full band experience. They were much fleshed out musically than on previous tours and made for a great show. To finish Lou talked about how ‘The Bells’ sold 30 copies and that it was one of his favourite songs. Really really great performance – wonderful to hear live.

There was much to admire but on the down side there was very little of Lou playing guitar, in fact for quite a few songs his guitar wasn’t touched. Maybe like Dylan he finds playing guitar more difficult with age or maybe that with a bigger band/sound he doesn’t feel the need to play as much. The show started late and you did get the feeling that there were technical problems going on and that the band were slightly under-rehearsed. I’m sure all these problems will be solved on later dates in the tour. For all Velvets fans the mini ‘VU & Nico’ section is worth the ticket price alone. Lou on this tour is a must see, something I’ve not said for many yrs.
