===================================================

When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls, oh
I let the old earth, take a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in place of pearls
and as time came around she came my way
As time came around she came

        For it's a long-long while
        from May to December
        And the days grow short
        when you reach September

And I have lost my teeth
and I'm walking in the little rain
Hey honey, I haven't got the time
        for any waiting game

And the days turn to gold
        as they grow few
        September
        November

        And these few golden days
I'd like to spend them with you
        These golden days
I'd like to spend them with you

        And the days dwindle down
        to a precious few
        September
        November

        And I'm not quite equipped
        for these waiting games
        I have a little money
and I've had a little pain

        And these few golden days
as the days grow so few
        These golden days
I'd like to spend them with you
        These precious golden days
I'd like to spend them with you

September Song

When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me the waiting game
If a maid refused me with a tossing curls, oh
I let the old earth, take a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in prays of pearls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around she came

For its a long, long while, from May to December
And the days grow short, when you reach September

And I have the lost my tears
and the walking in the little rain
Hey honey, I haven't gotta time for gaining Waiting Game

And the days turn to crawl (or "grow old") as they grow few
September, November

And these few colding (or "colden") days
I'd like to spend 'em with you
These golden days, I'd like to spend 'em with you

And the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November

And I'm not quite a quip for the waiting game
I have a little money, and I have a little pain

And these few golden days, as the days grow so few
These golden days, I'd like to spend 'em with you
These precious golden days, I'd like to spend 'em with you
September song, September song
September song, September song

I write, not only to thank you for this collection,
but to suggest that the transcription of Kurt Weil's
"September Song,"
as performed on "Lost in the Stars,"
could be made a little more accurate.

The following suggestions are based on two different sources.
First, in some places,
corrections become clear by applying rules of grammar
which are common knowledge to native speakers of English,
but which might not be so clear to nonnative speakers.
Second, from my own experience of listening to Lou Reed's cover
of this song many times over a period of years.
(One caveat: I am doing this from memory --
i don't have Lost in the Stars nearby to check myself).
In any event, the following suggested changes should result
in a truer transcription of Lou Reed's deliver of Weil's song:

the transcript reads:

"While I plied her with tears in prays of pearls."

it should be:

    "While I plied her with tears in place of pearls.";

the transcript reads:

"For its a long, long while"

it should be:

"Well, it's a long, long while"
(I'm not entirely sure of this -- need to listen to it again)

the transcript reads:

"And I have the lost my tears"

it should be:

"And I have lost my teeth"
(remember, this song is, among other things, about getting old,
and losing teeth is one of the song's strong images
of the ravages of old age...)

the transcript reads:

"Hey honey, I haven't gotta time"

it should be:

"Hey honey, I haven't got the time"
(Note that he really enunciates this clearly;
further, "gotta," which is generally a slang contraction for
"got to,"
just does not grammatically fit here.)

the transcript reads:

    "for gaining waiting game"

it should be:

    "for any waiting game"

the transcript reads:

"And the days turn to grow old"

it should be:

"And the days turn to gold"
("... turn to grow old" does not make grammatical sense
(and this is decidedly not a nonsense song,
nor is it one that "plays fast and loose"
with grammar to utter nonlinear,
impressionistic collections of images,
like, for example, Courtney Love does in her song "Plump"
from Hole's album "Live Through This"),
while "turn to gold" does make sense as the completion of the line
as well as in the larger context of the song;
in addition, "the days turn to gold"
works to set up the climax in the song:
"these precious golden days, I want to spend them with you")

the transcript reads
(four times -- second and fourth line of 5th stanza,
and 4th and 6th line of 7th stanza):

"I'd like to spend 'em with you"

it should be:

"I'd like to spend them with you"

the transcript reads:

    "And the days dwindle down"

it should be:

    "As the days dwindle down"
(?? I need to listen to this again to be sure,
but, even without checking,
"as" makes more sense syntactically and logically than "and.")

the transcript reads:

"And I'm not quite a equip"

it should be:

    "And I'm not quite equipped"
