How to read my Chords Notation

I do NOT use a common style for showing chords, so please read the following notes and examples.

In this archives, "chord name"/"chord name" does NOT means SLASH CHORDS (a.k.a. on chord or fractional chord). I used the symbol "/" for dividing a bar in halves.

    ex. G/F# does NOT means G(onF#)

I wrote SLASH CHORDS like this: "chord name"(on"bass note")

    ex. G(onF#)

{   } means a bar.

    {                     }

    | /    /    /    /    | --- 1/4

    | /  /  /   /  /  /   | --- 1/6    triplet
       __   __   __   __
    | / /  / /  / /  / /  | --- 1/8    8 beat
       __   __   __   __
    | ///  ///  ///  ///  | --- 1/12   triplet
       ___  ___  ___  ___
    | //// //// //// //// | --- 1/16   16 beat

Examples (8 beat)

    {A} means                 {A/D} means
       __   __   __   __         __   __   __   __
    | / /  / /  / /  / /  |   | / /  / /  / /  / /  |
    { A                   }   { A       / D         }

    {A.D/E} means             {A/D.E} means
       __   __   __   __         __   __   __   __
    | / /  / /  / /  / /  |   | / /  / /  / /  / /  |
    { A  . D  / E         }   { A       / D  . E    }

    {A.D/E.A} means
       __   __   __   __
    | / /  / /  / /  / /  |
    { A  . D  / E  . A    }

This chords and rhythm notation can NOT explain syncopated rhythm (e.g., "Sweet Jane" ...etc), so please play in your feeling. (You know this is NOT a strict sheet music. Only simple guide for playing Rock N Roll Music.)

How to read my Tabs Notation

I wrote tab's symbols from Howard Wright's tab notation guide. But symbol of harmonics play (including picking harmonics) differ from his tab notation guide.

Tab Notations

    h - hammer on
    p - pull off
    b - bend string up
    r - release bend
    / - slide up
    \ - slide down
    v - vibrato
    ^ - harmonics (differ from H.Wright's notation)

Guitar Tuning

The Velvet Underground played using down-tuning on many of their songs.

excerpt from Peel Slowly And See booklet (pages 30 and 33)

The Velvets down-tuned their guitars, Morrison points out, "in deference to what John's viola was built to do. If we played in a normal E tuning, for John to get the pitch that he wanted in an open modal style, he would have to uptune, which would put too much strain on the neck and the bridge of the viola. To prevent that from happening, we downtuned a half-tone, sometimes a whole tone" -- from E to D, for instance. The guitars had heavy gauge, flat wound strings to compensate for the increased slack in string tension.

D tuning

    all the strings downtuned a whole-tone

    1d  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from e to d)
    2A  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from B to A)
    3F  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from G to F)
    4C  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from D to C)
    5G  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from A to G)
    6D  ----- * downtuned a whole-tone (from E to D)

    ex. "The Black Angel's Death Song",
        "Run Run Run"
        all the tracks of _1969 Live_ ...etc

D# (E flat) tuning

    all the strings downtuned a half-tone

    1d# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from e to d#)
    2A# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from B to A#)
    3F# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from G to F#)
    4C# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from D to C#)
    5G# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from A to G#)
    6D# ----- * downtuned a half-tone (from E to D#)

    ex. "Venus In Furs",
        "Heroin" ...etc

"Ostrich Guitar" tuning

    all the strings tuned to the same note

    1d  ----- * downtuned to d (from e to d)
    2d  ----- *   uptuned to d (from B to d)
    3D  ----- * downtuned to D (from G to D)
    4D
    5D  ----- *   uptuned to D (from A to D)
    6D_ ----- * downtuned to D_(from E to D_)
